Over the years I have been blessed to be able to travel the U.S. a pretty good amount. When I was a kid my family would hit the road every other summer. I love being out on the road, it's a freedom that just cant be expressed until you fill your tank with gas and just go. Several summers over the last couple decades I have hit the road to go watch baseball games around the country. It was on one of these trips in 2010 while in Minneapolis I got to try the famed Jucy Lucy at 2 of the places that are really known for them: Matt's Bar & The 5*8 Club. I have seen the battles on Man Vs Food and Food Wars, but when I was there, I had to try it for myself.
After going vegan in 2012, I never thought I would be able to have something that was so close to what I had back then but vegan... until yesterday!
The Jucy Lucy
Yield: 1 Jucy Lucy patty
Recipe From: Ken
What you will need:
2 hamburger patties (*it's best if you make the patties 3oz each, instead of 4oz)
3 tbsp cheese sauce (*or other vegan cheese of your choice, as long as it melts really good)
How to Make The Jucy Lucy:
Take one of the hamburger patties and gently press down the inside of the patty, leaving a rim around the outside.
Scoop the 3 tbsp of the cheese sauce into the middle of the first patty. I like to make sure that my cheese sauce is really cold. This way it's stiffer and stays in place. This just makes it much easier to work with.
Take the second hamburger patty and place it on top and gently crimp the sides of the two patties all the way around.
As always I like to put my burger patty in my air fryer at 350*F on bake for 5 minutes. I will flip it about half way through. If you do this, be very careful when you flip it as you do not want those patties to come apart. Baking it this way helps set those patties together.
Once done in the air fryer, I spritz a little olive oil in a small skillet, using just enough to coat the skillet. When the pan is hot, place the patty in gently and cook until both sides are nice and brown.
Serve it just like you would a regular burger and enjoy!
Tip: Be careful when you bite into it as the cheese sauce will be very HOT! Tip: A typical Jucy Lucy has just diced, grilled onions and a couple pickle slices (all on the bottom bun). However, feel free to add whatever you want to make it your own! Tip: The cheese sauce I use for this is basically the recipe at that link above, but I omit the Rotel tomatoes and red chili flakes. This way its just a cheese sauce, not a spicy cheese sauce.
