Spicy Orange Tofu

Especially during the work week I am always looking for quick and easy meals that are super tasty. This one nails all of those criteria. This base recipe comes from Vegan Richa. I, as always, changed it some to fit my needs/wants. The main changes were that I reduced the salt and I added a tad more sriracha to take it from just Orange Tofu to Spicy Orange Tofu.

Spicy Orange Tofu Yield: 4 servings (photos shown is 1 1/3 servings) Recipe From: Vegan Richa but with my tweaks

What you will need:

  • 14 oz block of firm tofu

  • 2 tbsp cornstarch

  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder

  • a few spritz of a spray oil

  • 4 garlic cloves, finely chopped

  • 1 inch of fresh ginger, finely chopped

  • 2 tbsp low sodium soy sauce

  • 1 cup of orange juice (*preferably with no pulp)

  • 2 tbsp rice vinegar (*white vinegar works fine as well)

  • 3 tbsp maple syrup

  • 1/4 cup water

  • 1.5 tbsp cornstarch (*thickener for the sauce)

  • 2 tsp sriracha sauce

  • 1/4 tsp low sodium Pink Himalayan Sea Salt

How to Make The Spicy Orange Tofu:

  1. For the tofu I like to use tofu that has been frozen twice. This gives it a "meatier" texture. What I do is when I buy some tofu, I toss it in the freezer over night. The next morning I pull it out to completely thaw. Then that night, back into the freezer it goes until I need it for a recipe, at which time I will remove it from the freezer to completely thaw again.

  2. After removing the water from the tofu and pressing it for at least 15 minutes, cut the full block into cubes. Add the cubes to a mixing bowl and sprinkle with cornstarch, garlic powder and black pepper. Toss the cubes around until they are all coated really well.

  3. To cook the tofu, I like to spread the cubes out evenly on my tray (spritz with some oil, lightly) and toss them into the air fryer on 350*F for about 12 minutes.

  4. To make the sauce, it couldn't be easier: add to a small saucepan the garlic, ginger, soy sauce, orange juice, vinegar, maple syrup, sriracha sauce and sea salt. Stir it well to mix it together and turn the heat on high. While waiting for it to come to a boil, mix the 1.5 tbsp and 1/4 cup of water together in a small bowl. When the sauce mixture is at a boil, add the cornstarch mixture and stir well. I suggest turning it down to low heat at this point. This will thicken up nicely. Once thickened, taste and adjust anything if needed for your taste buds.

  5. Once the tofu is done air frying (it will have a slight crispiness to it), toss it in the spicy orange sauce until all pieces are very well coated.

  6. I like to serve it over rice. Very easy, very tasty and very filling!
